Nigel takes the Champion of Champions


Nigel Richards triumphed in the Champion of Champions held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The New Zealander living in Malaysia assured himself of the title when he beat Causeway Challenge 2010 winner Panupol Sujjayakorn 491 to 418 in the penultimate round, leaving himself an unassailable win and 697 points of spread clear of the star studded field.

The Champion of Champions included 9 of the 10 World Champions plus Causeway Challenge 2008 winner David Eldar. The event was a triple round robin of 27 rounds played across three days. Nigel, Panupol and David Eldar contested the lead in the early stages before Richards ended the day in first place by pipping 2001 World Champion Brian Cappelletto by 7 points. From then on Nigel was a step ahead of the other competitors as he led for the rest of the tournament, eventually finishing two games clear on a staggering 19 wins and +1415 spread.

Canada's David Boys, the 1995 World Champion finished in second place with 17 wins after an amazing run of 11 wins in 12 matches during the middle stages of the tournament. Thailand's 2003 World Champion Panupol Sujjayakorn rounded out the top 3 on 16 wins, a couple of games clear of the chasing pack.
