Toronto to launch first international open
Now Canada is getting into Collins mode, announcing its first international open tournament to be played to WESPA rules and word source. The Toronto International Scrabble Open will be held from September 22–25. At the same time and in the same venue, three domestic (TWL only) tournaments will be run: the Toronto Club's Michael Wise Memorial Tournament, the Leah Katz Early Bird and a School Scrabble event.
Organiser Tony Leah, a WESPA executive member, says this overlapping of events will give WESPA a royal chance to showcase world Scrabble to North American players, including schoolchildren.
The tournament will have one open division, playing 26 rounds spread over four days. Depending on the number of entries received, the total prize fund will be $10,000, $13,000 or $16,000, and first prize will be $4000, $5000 or $6000. John Chew will direct. For more details of the tournament see the Schedule page.
