Nigel Wins Francophone World Championships

The 44th French-speaking World Scrabble Championship is taking place at Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) on 18-25 July 2015.

Nigel Richards, undisputably the best Scrabble player in the world in the English language, has just won the Classique world title in French language by winning the Francophone Classique world championship after 17 qualifying rounds and a best-of-three finals in Louvain, Belgium, on Monday.

He beat Gabon's Schelick Ilagou Rekawe two games to one in the final.

Mr Richards does not speak any French and has memorised an entire French Scrabble dictionary in nine weeks earlier this year.

This is the first instance in history that one person had won a scrabble world title in two different languages.
